Walker Fry Rucker passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 14th. He was born June 21, 1923 in Greensboro, third child of Pierce Christie Rucker and Mary Fry Rucker, an eighth generation native of Guilford county. He attended local public schools until 1934. In late 1934, at 11 years old, he was appointed a Page in the US Senate and served there three years. In 1938, he returned to Greensboro, and graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1942. Walker was designated by Senator Robert R Reynolds for entrance to the West Point Military Academy in June 1942. Instead, he chose to attend the University of South Carolina. He went into military service in the summer of 1943 in the US Air Corps. Walker went through cadet training, graduating as a navigator in January 1945. He served as a navigator on B-17s and DC-3s until he received an honorable discharge upon completion of military service in October 1945. He enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in June 1949 with the BS in Commerce. Walker joined the family business, The South Atlantic Companies, where he served until his retirement in 1995. In 1955, Walker married Rebecca Frazier of Greensboro. They were the parents of three children, Walker Fry Jr., Ann Ingle, and James Gray. Walker served as Past President of the Children’s Home Society North Carolina, Evergreens Retirement Center, the Greensboro Historical Museum, the Greensboro Rotary Club, the Coral Bay Club and served as executive board member of the General Greene Counsel of the Boy Scouts of America (Silver Beaver Award recipient)and Family and Children’s Services of Greater Greensboro. He was Vice President and three term Director of the North Carolina Railroad Company. With his brother and sister, the family endowed the Mary and Pierce Rucker emergency wing of Wesley Long Hospital. Walker was a member of the Virginia Society the Cincinnati and the Monticello Association. Walker loved his family, his travels and his books. He was most happy sitting on his porch, overlooking the sound in Morehead City. Walker was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Rebecca Frazier Rucker and by his son Walker Fry Rucker, Jr. He is survived by his daughter Ann Ingle Rucker and son James Gray Rucker, his wife Melinda, and three grandchildren Gray, Lindsay and Elizabeth. A private family burial will take place on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In leu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Guilford County Animal Shelter, 4525 W.
