Samuel D. Smoak

April 20, 1933 - January 19, 2022

COLFAX - Samuel D. Smoak, 88, of River Landing in Colfax, NC passed away on January 19, 2022. He was born on April 20, 1933, in Greensboro, NC, the son of the late Andrew C. Smoak and Mollie H. Smoak. Along with his parents, Sam is preceded in death by his brother, Gaspard H. Smoak. Samuel is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia R. Smoak; daughter, Karen Leonard (Thomas); son, Andrew Smoak (Saundra); grandson, Scott Leonard (Taylor); granddaughter, Allison Hughes (Matt); grandson, Stephen Smoak (Erin); granddaughter, Rachel Smoak; granddaughter, Sarah Smoak; great grandson, Nathan Samuel Hughes; and sister Marilyn Yarber. Sam graduated from Guilford High School (Class of 1951) and Guilford College (Class of 1955). He was a veteran of the US Army (1956 – 1958). Sam married his high school sweetheart and the absolute love of his life in 1955. They brought up their children, Karen and Andy, close to his parents and his brother’s family. Sam treasured family and always enjoyed the opportunity to be together. Sam spent most of his working years at Guilford Mills, Inc. where he served as a controller and in accounting. Sam enjoyed reading, music, golfing, and traveling. His happy place was the beach where he loved to walk and relax. Sam was a man that loved God. He was a faithful member of Muir’s Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Saints Alive Choir. He lived a life of service and love for others. A celebration of Sam’s life will be held on February 5, 2022, at Muir’s Chapel UMC, at 11:00 a.m. Following the inurnment, a reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Muir’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 314 Muir’s Chapel Road, Greensboro, NC 27410. Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel is serving the Smoak family.
