Norma Jean Glass Shepard
June 20, 1932 - February 25, 2022
Norma Jean (Glass) Shepard, born June 20th, 1932, to the late Richard Glass and Violet Andrews Rankin, passed away on Friday, February 25th, 2022. She is survived by her son Kevin Shepard (Brenda), daughter Brenda Planes (Phillip), grandchildren Jordan Sharpe (J.T.), Lauren Shepard (David), Tanner Planes, and Brooke Planes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank D. Shepard, brother Arlie Glass, and daughter Sandra K. Shepard. Norma was a graduate of Greensboro High School, class of 1950, and a lifelong resident of Guilford County. Her true passion in life revolved around helping others, and she lived that passion through the Missions Committee of the Pleasant Union United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Julian Garden Club and enjoyed spending time planting flowers and taking care of her orchids. Norma loved birds and got great pleasure in seeing her bird feeder full outside of the kitchen window. She also very much enjoyed singing and was a member of the Calvary United Methodist and Pleasant Union Methodist church choir for many years. There was even a time when she convinced her husband Frank to take dance lessons, so they were cutting a rug at Green’s Supper Club and Burlington Moose Lodge. Norma was famous for her homemade “Shepard punch” but what she really loved was a good glass of Riesling. After her husband was stationed in Germany, she developed a love for travel and would take the chance to visit other places at every opportunity. Aruba was one of her favorites. One thing was certain, she loved watching her NC State Wolfpack play, as she also played basketball in high school. She could be found eating popcorn and yelling at “her boys” on most game days. She even wrote to the newspaper editor once because she felt like they were covering Carolina more than her NC State. Norma was the beloved matriarch of the Shepard family and will be sorely missed by all that knew her. A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 27, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at Pleasant Union United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be on Monday, February 28, 2022, at 11:00 A.M at Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian, N.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pleasant Union UMC Missions Committee Funds, 5929 Coble Church Road, Liberty, NC, 27298.
