Mary Hargrove Craven passed away on Wednesday July 14th, 2021, at the age of 86 with her husband and daughters by her side. Mary and Ben celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 15th, 2021. Mary was born in Winston Salem, NC to Inez Swan and Willis Festus Hargrove. She spent her early years in Knoxville, TN and moved to Greensboro, NC in the 8th grade. Mary attended Greensboro Senior High School (Grimsley) and Woman’s College in Greensboro. She started dating Ben, the love of her life, in 1953. Through his service in the Marines, Mary and Ben lived in Quantico, VA and Camp Lejeune, NC before settling in Greensboro to raise their three beautiful daughters. Mary was an active member of West Market Street United Methodist Church. She served in many capacities including the UMW, the Art Committee, Wedding Coordinator and the Sisters in the Spirit Fellowship Group. Mary was a past president of the Greensboro Symphony Guild and received their Golden Note Award. Mary enjoyed being a part of her Hobby Club, many bridge groups and the Historical Book Club. A true southern hostess, Mary was most in her element while entertaining her wide circle of friends. She loved to travel, making frequent trips to her family home in Oriental, NC, taking each of her grandkids on their first trip to New York City, enjoying summers at Litchfield Beach Villas and even visited her granddaughter who was studying abroad in Prague. Mary spent countless time with friends at the beach, lake, and mountains across North Carolina. Mary was predeceased by her parents and sister, Edith Kelly and son in law Jim Roach. She is survived by her husband Ben Craven of Greensboro, daughter Mary Ben Roach (Ken Elliott) of Greensboro, Lynne Redfearn (Robbie) of Chesterfield, VA and Ann Downing (D.Lon) of Wilmington, NC. and sister Emily Johnson (Phil) of Raleigh, NC “GrandMary” had a very special bond with her eight grandchildren, Sarah Roach Masters, Will Roach, Julia Roach, Melissa Redfearn Haynes, Ellyn Redfearn McKissick, Drew Redfearn, Craven Downing Wells and Katherine Downing. Mary was also so blessed to have six adored great grandchildren. The family will miss her famous M&M cookies, green Christmas cookies and deviled eggs. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be sent to West Market Street United Methodist Church, Pastors discretionary fund or AuthoraCare Collective of Greensboro, NC A service will be held on Saturday July 17th, 2pm at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC. The family will be in the Gathering Room at 1pm until the service to greet and visit. The church does require masks to be worn for all attendees.
