Iris Marie Hicks Smith

May 14, 1931 - March 7, 2022

Marie was born at home in Stokes County on May 14, 1931, one of 14 children born to the late Terry and Rosalee Hicks. She enjoyed reading and listening to music in quiet times, but her passion was playing golf. So much that she played up until she was 89 years old, touting 3 holes-in-one over the years. She was a wonderful and loving mother to 7 children supporting their activities, whether it was being a Den Mother for the Scouts or assisting in the building of a rolling bed to enter the Bed Race for the March of Dimes. She was a member of the Ai Church in Oak Ridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Elwood Bryant Smith in 1999 and several brothers and sisters. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Surviving are her 7 children, Jerry Bryant Smith (Diane), Edith Smith Ezernack (Larry, deceased), and Shirley Smith Sink (Joe) all of Kernersville, Susan Smith Martin (Steve) of Belews Creek, James Dennis Smith of Stokesdale, Kenneth Ray Smith (Carol, deceased) of Kernersville, and Melissa Smith Bilisoly (Frank) of Greensboro; a brother Willie Hicks (Betty) of Summerfield, sisters Betty Hicks of Reidsville and Pat Urkle of Kernersville; 14 grandchildren Derrick Sink, Jonathon Sink, Shelby Isaacson, Barry Smith, Angie Richardson, Susane Fox, Kristy Pruitt, Lori Coultress, April Smith, Robert Harrell, Dawn Bilisoly, Jacob Bilisoly, Hunter Bilisoly, and Andy Bilisoly; 11 great grandchildren Wesley Richardson, Bryan Richardson, Ashley Phillips, Daniella Smith, Jordan Isaacson, Michaela Isaacson, Austin Pruitt, Colby Pruitt, Haley Smith, Grace Harrell, and Jackson Harrell; a great-great granddaughter Elli Bean Phillips. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at Forbis & Dick- Stokesdale. The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the cemetery at the Ai Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
