Herman Wilfred Sanders Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Herman Wilfred “Sandy” Sanders, formerly of Raleigh, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 16, 2022, at the age of 90. Sandy was born January 18, 1932, in Wilmington, North Carolina, the only child of the late James Nixon and Mabel Edens Sanders. After graduating from New Hanover High School, he attended Wilmington College (now UNC-Wilmington) before enlisting in the US Air Force. He met and married Ada, the love of his life while they were both serving in the USAF at Eglin AFB, Florida. He rose through the Air Force ranks to that of Master Sergeant before retiring after 21 years in 1972. Moving to Raleigh, Sandy worked for Manpower Inc. as the Industrial Services Manager, the NC Employment Security Commission, Durham Technical College, and NC Division of Veteran’s Affairs. He poured his Christian heart and soul into these labors of love serving as an advocate for others. Following his second retirement, Sandy busied himself with caring for his family, tinkering in his workshop, and visiting with neighbors. He served his community alongside Ada through St. Paul’s Christian Church in Raleigh as long as his health would allow. After 61 years of wedded life, Ada B. Sanders preceded him in death in 2017. Sandy was beloved by his family and will be greatly missed. Survivors include Sandy’s three children: Connie Kiser (Charles) of Palestine, TX, Laurie Newell (Keith) of Liberty, NC and Greg Sanders (Stephanie) of Harkers Island, NC. A daughter, Rachel Annette Sanders, preceded him in death. He is also survived by seven grandchildren Brian Kiser (Jenna), Alan Kiser (Jennifer), Matthew Newell (Amy), Faith Newell, Eden, Gaston, and Grace Sanders. Seven great-grandchildren include Alexis and Alec Bell, Addyson Kiser, Maris, Jude, Bernadette, and Simon Newell. Sandy’s survivors also include precious nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Christian Church, 3331 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27612. Visitation will take place at St. Paul’s Christian Church, Thursday, August 25, 2022, from 9:30-10:30 in the church fellowship hall. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 10:30. The Burial Service will take place at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
