H. Lloyd WILKERSON Major General, USMC (Ret) Major General H. Lloyd Wilkerson served over 36 years as a Marine. He was born at Troy, Tennessee, on October 31, 1919. He was a member of the Erskine College Class of 1941 graduating with a BA in mathematics and English. His first job was as an inspector for the Retail Credit Company in Charleston, South Carolina. With the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. Following boot camp at MCRD Parris Island, he joined 7th Marines and later 1st Battalion, Seventh Marines (LtCol “Chesty” Puller, Commanding) and as a PFC rifleman participated in the capture of Guadalcanal. He advanced through the enlisted ranks to Platoon Sergeant and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in April 1945. He subsequently served in combat again with the 1st Marine Division in both Korea and Vietnam where he commanded the First Marines, the oldest regiment in the Corps. In 1972, he was promoted to Brigadier General and became Commanding General of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Two years later he was promoted to Major General while serving as Deputy Chief of Staff for Research, Development and Studies at HQMC. Subsequently, he became Commanding General of the 3rd Marine Division, and Commanding General of the III Marine Amphibious Force in the Far East. His final assignment, prior to retirement in 1978, was Director of Personnel Management Division again at HQMC in Washington. He has commanded at every level from platoon to amphibious force during his Marine career. The General holds hereditary membership in The North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati; and the Society of the Descendants of the Colonial Clergy. General Wilkerson is married to Lillian J. Gibson of Ware Shoals, SC. He and his late wife Jeanne, daughter of the late Congressman Thomas C. Coffin, member from Idaho, and the late Cora Aileen Franklin Coffin, were married at the Post Chapel, Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Virginia, on April 25, 1945. They have 3 sons: Major General Thomas L. Wilkerson, U. S. Marine Corps (Ret.) former CEO of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation; Richard N. Wilkerson, President (Emeritus) of Michelin North America, and Fred C. Wilkerson, a chef with a BA Degree from the New England Culinary Institute, now working at Whitestone Masonic Home.
