Bernard "Bernie" Vane Elliott
May 4, 1932 - February 6, 2022
Bernard (Bernie) V Elliott went home to be with the Lord on February 6, 2022. He was surrounded by family as he went home. A 2:00 p.m. graveside service with full military honors will be held at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery, 5120 Burlington Road, in Greensboro on Friday, February 11, 2022. He was born in Itasca, Texas to his parents, Bernard V Elliott, and Bessie Davis. They preceded him in death. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1955. He joined the United States Army after college and became the first pilot to fly the Huey helicopter. He served two tours in Vietnam where he flew fixed wings and recorded more than 44,550 hours of flight time. He also served two years at the Pentagon. He retired a Full Bird Colonel after serving 27 years. Bernie enjoyed fishing, golfing, skiing, and traveling. He and his wife Gerri have traveled to every National Park in the United States and Canada. He has visited many other places including Italy and Holland, but his favorite was Germany. Bernie was a kind, gentle, giving, and loving man. He was a great friend to many and a better family man. His heart was filled with happiness and sunshine, but one of his greatest assets was his heartwarming smile. God thank you for blessing us with such a wonderful man. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine K Elliott, son Bernard V Elliott III, stepsons David L Johnson (Clyda) and Mark L Johnson (Angela). He also leaves behind five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Please send any donations in his honor to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301-0301, Attn: Gift Processing, Cincinnati, OH, 45250-0301.
