Mr. Lyle L. Baker

Mr. Lyle L. Baker, 73, went to see his Savior on Friday morning, July 16, 2010.

Mr. Baker’s funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel with Rev. Tommy Bartlett officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

A native of Mahaska County, Iowa, Mr. Baker was born on the longest day of the year, June 21, 1937, to Iowa farmers Howard and Hazel Maughan Baker. He was one of seven boys.

He proudly wore a US Navy uniform for twenty years, during which time he served in the Vietnam War as a Med Tech, and the on the USS Beale, a destroyer. He then assisted astronauts in Houston, Texas as a Navy medic in a NASA test program entitled SMEAT, in 1973. After his retirement from the Navy, he continued his medical career by working for the Moses Cone Health System as a Chief Histotechnologist from 1973 until 1999. He then went on to work for Greensboro Pathology Associates until he finally retired in 2005.

His life was certainly filled to the brim with happiness and love, spare time was spent in various ways; from establishing hospital histology labs to histology organizations, where he held multiple positions of authority. He led an amazing and fulfilling life.

He was an active member of the VFW Post 7999 and Post 1314 of the Marine Corps League. On November 1, 1957 he married Linda Taylor. Together they enjoyed 52 joyful years.

Surviving in addition to his wife Linda, are daughters Lisa Baker Combs, and her husband, Dale Combs of Stokesdale and Laura Baker Brickey and her husband, Larry Brickey of Browns Summit, two granddaughters Julie Combs and Lauren Brickey, a brother Jerry Lee Baker of New Sharon, Iowa, and his beloved ‘princess’ Katie, a Ragdoll cat.

He will be happily remembered for his many hobbies of gardening, traveling, camping and photography; his “quirky” sense of humor and his smirk of mischief.

His family would like to extend their gratitude towards the many doctors who immensely helped in his health these past few months, along with the nurses of Wesley long Hospital. They truly helped in his diagnosis serving as care physicians and as confidants.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm this evening, Sunday, at Forbis & Dick Brooke Chapel, 8320 US Highway 158 in Stokesdale.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407.
