WALNUT COVE- Ronald “Red” Gray Bennett, 67, died Wednesday, September 18, 2013, after battling his illness for an extended period of time, at his home.
He was born January 6, 1946 in Stokes County to Coy Riley and Mary Ruth Reid Bennett. Red loved his family, was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved animals, especially horses. He was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. Red retired from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System with 39 years of service in the Food Service Department.
A 1:00 pm funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Refuge Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Jamie Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Rhodes Bennett of the home; 2 daughters, Ronda Duggins and husband Brooks of Walnut Cove and Monica Bennett of Winston-Salem; 9 grandchildren, Ashley Hackley and husband Robert, Junior Duggins and wife Devon, Caroline Cornelius and husband William, Bobbie Smith, Tabitha Duggins, Alexus Smith, Da’lon Smith, Ryan Duggins and David Jefferson; 1 great grandchild, Suki Hackley; 1 great grandchild “on the way” Abigail Duggins; 4 sisters, Wanda Smith of Max Meadows, VA, Diane Fulp of Walkertown, Shelia Ingle and husband Brad of Bitley, MI and Marlene Church and husband Buster of Walkertown; 1 brother, Robbie Bennett and wife Merinda of King.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm, Friday, September 20, 2013 at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at his home.
