Mr. Fred Dixon MitchellMADISON – Fred Dixon Mitchell, 89, was called to his eternal home on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Hospice Home of Rockingham.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 11, 2012 at Woodland Cemetery in Madison with Reverend Randy Jessup officiating.
Fred was born on July 8, 1922 in Rockingham County to the late John M. and Minnie Wilson Mitchell. He married his sweetheart, Rosemary Wortham on January 22, 1944. He was known throughout his life as a hard-working and loving man. He ran a store in West End, Mayodan with his father and grandfather for many years. His passion, other than his family, was his hauling and grading business, Fred D. Mitchell & Sons, Inc. that he ran for over 65 years with his father, son and grandson, that is still in business today. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Mayodan where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Caudell Alley and Margaret Tucker, and his beloved granddaughter, Beth Mitchell; sister-in-law, Marguerite Wortham and brother-in-law, Gordon Tucker.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rosemary Wortham Mitchell of the home; son, Worth Mitchell and wife, Nancy Lee of Stoneville; brother, Berkley Mitchell and wife, Hilda of Madison; sister, Iris Griffin, and husband, M.G. of Madison; grandson, Chad Mitchell and wife, Natalie, of Stoneville; great-grandsons, Brandon and Brady Mitchell of Stoneville; brother-in-law, Wartha Alley of Madison; sister-in-law, Patricia Knight and husband, William “Putt” of Madison; “adopted” grandson, Bruce Burroughs and wife, Sandy and a host of loving special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service and other times at the home at 111 W. Decatur Street, Madison.
